Obituary for David L. Mertes

David L. Mertes, age 60 of Henry, IL, passed away Sun., Sept. 8, 2019, at 8:10 a.m. at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
David was born Jan. 12, 1959 in Streator, IL to Ralph and Elsie Mertes. He married Deborah Watson on Nov. 9, 2016 in Henry.
David is survived by his wife, Deborah of Henry; son, Richard Mertes of Chillicothe; his mother, Elsie Mertes of Lostant; step-daughters, Melissa (Paul) Jury and Rebecca (Jarrod) Lester both of Henry; two step-sons, Chris (Trudy) Schaffner of Delevan and Scott (Elizabeth) Schaffner of Clinton; 12 step-grandchildren, Dalton, Alannah and Brendan Lester, Aubrey Harris, Blake, Charley Grace, Chloe, Claire, Jake, Noah, McKenzie and Andrew Schaffner; one step-great-granddaughter, Willow; siblings, Dennis (Grace) Mertes of Gardner; Karen Schmitt, Susie (Kevin) Brandner and Daniel (Danelle) Mertes all of Lostant; mother-in-law, Ruth Ann Salisbury of Metamora; sister-in-law, Kathy (Steve) Hagerstrom of Sparland; brothers-in-law, Randy (Denise) Salisbury of Sparland and Chuck (Cindy) Salisbury of Henry; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Mertes on Sept. 5, 2019; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and one step-son, Michael Davis.
Cremation rites were accorded; and private family services were held at Calvert and Johnson Downtown Chapel in Henry. Private inurnment in Henry Cemetery followed services.
David was most recently employed by Casey’s in Granville.
David loved to laugh. He will be missed by all who loved him. He had a huge heart, and never knew a stranger. He liked camping, fishing, hunting and playing cards.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
