Obituary for John T. Reis

John T. Reis, 96, of Rockford, formerly of Pontiac, IL passed away on Friday, February 15, 2019 in Rockford, IL.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday February 22, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Carl LoPresti officiating. Burial will follow mass at St. John’s Cemetery in rural Fairbury, IL where military rites will be accorded. In lieu of flowers or memorials, a fitting gesture would be encouragement to a struggling student.
John was born May 29, 1922 in Pontiac, IL, a son of John J. and Eleanor (Taylor) Reis. He attended St. Mary’s Grade School, then graduating from Pontiac Township High School in 1941. He furthered his studies at Loras College in Dubuque, IA and Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, CA.
He served his country in the United States Navy in Okinawa from 1943 – 1946. John’s 37-year teaching career in Mathematics began in Iowa, continued in California, concluding in Champaign at Central High School and Parkland College. He married Lucille Koys in 1955, she passed in 1958. He married Dorothy Giovanini on June 7, 1961 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac, IL. She survives.
John is also survived by two sons: Raymond J. Reis of Champaign, IL and Charles E. Reis of Nashville, TN; two daughters: Rosemary T. (Leroy) Armendariz of Roscoe, IL and Margaret A. (William III) Loffler of Easley, SC; his grandchildren: Rachel A. (Raney) Webb, Allyson M. Reis, Nicholas Armendariz, Joshua Armendariz, Emily Armendariz, and Hannah Loffler; one brother Edward Reis of Dwight, IL; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Lucille; two brothers: Eugene and Bernard Reis; and one sister: Bernadine List.
He was a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, VFW Post 8789 in Fairbury, IL, Knights of Columbus, and St. Mary’s Council. In retirement, John enjoyed playing organ music to area nursing homes.
John was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend who will be greatly missed.
