Lawrence “Larry” Irle Exton, 82, of Pontiac, IL passed away at 11:48 am on Monday, December 24, 2018 at Good Samaritan Home in Pontiac, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 1314 East Indiana Avenue, Pontiac, Illinois 61764 with Reverends Richard Jumper and Ron Pagel officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, December 28, 2018 at Calvert & Martin Funeral Home, 413 North Main Street, Pontiac, Illinois 61764 and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. According to the family’s wishes cremation rites will be accorded following services with burial at a later date at Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) or the American Red Cross, PO Box 37839, Boone, IA 50037.
Larry was born July 12, 1936 in Champaign, IL a son of William Thomas and Mildred Bernice (Irle) Exton. He married Faye Ann Hermsmeier on June 7, 1959 at the Ursa Christian Church. She survives in Pontiac, IL.
He is also survived by his daughter: Elizabeth “Beth” (Ron) Pagel of Appleton, WI; one daughter-in-law: Holly Exton of Tolono, IL; four grandchildren: Benjamin and Jacob Pagel, Rachel (Ryan) Hanrahan, and Sheila (Matt) Albers; two great grandchildren: Davis and Kalvin Albers; and one niece: Martha Exton of St. Louis, MO. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: William Thomas Exton; and one son: Thomas Exton.
Larry was raised in Thomasboro, IL and graduated from Rantoul High School, class of 1954, where he was an outstanding athlete, particularly football and basketball. Larry went on to receive a football scholarship to Illinois State Normal University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Social Sciences in 1958. He furthered his education and received his Master’s Degree in 1961, from the University of Illinois in Administration He started teaching and coaching at San Jose High School from 1958-1961. From 1961-1970, Larry taught and coached, as well as being the Athletic Director and Principal, at Winchester High, coaching the last undefeated season there. In 1970, he began working for Pontiac Township High School, where he was the head football coach for ten years and vocational guidance coordinator until 1994. After his retirement, he continued to be an avid sports fan, always watching whatever game was on. Larry was honored with being inducted into the Hall of Fame for Rantoul High School- as a player and Pontiac Township High School- as a coach.
He was very active in the communities that he lived in serving as a member of the Gideons, former Moose Member, as an Illinois High School Basketball Offiical, a member of the Illinois High School Football Association- attending many clinics, Pheasant Forever, Ducks Unlimited, National Education Association, Illinois Retired Teachers Association. Because it was important to him, through the American Red Cross he was a monthly blood donor. Larry also was a member of the Christian Church, serving wherever he could: board chairman, Property Chairman, Deacon, and many committees.
Larry and his wife, Faye were adventurers, traveling to all 50 states- mostly RVing, going through all of Canada except for the NW Territories, Quebec, most of the National Parks traveling on the farthest East and West highways in the US. Two traveling highlights were their two-week trip to Germany where they explored their heritage, and their 50th Wedding Anniversary trip where they took the whole family to Hawaii to celebrate.
In the latter years, they wintered in South Texas and summered in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
His family meant everything to him, he will be greatly missed and known as a great husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, coach, mentor and friend.
