Dean was born April 24th, 1932 in Decatur, IL to Earl and Bertha Christner Nichols. Dean was a graduate of LeRoy High School and attended Illinois Wesleyan University prior to enlisting in the US Army National Guard. He, along with many other LeRoyans, joined the 144th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion at Ft. Lewis Washington. His childhood sweetheart, Sara Sigler, joined him there and they married later the next year in Santa Barbara, California on April 5th, 1952. They were married for 66 years. Sara survives in LeRoy.

Dean and Sara raised their family in LeRoy and had three children. Mark (Melinda) Nichols deceased, Michael Nichols, LeRoy and Karen Bruning, Bloomington. Also surviving are five grandsons. Brett (Melanie) Bruning, Tyler Bruning and Shane Bruning, all of Bloomington, Ethan Bruning of Chicago and Nathan Chambers of Knox, Indiana and two nephews: Randy (Mary) and Stephen (Gail) Sigler and their families.

He was preceded in death by his brother Dale C. Nichols.

Dean retired from Kroger Company in 1996 after 41 years. After retirement, Dean worked for Calvert-Belangee-Bruce Funeral Homes.

He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, LeRoy and the Ruel Neal American Legion Post #79 in LeRoy. Dean was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and was a huge supporter of LeRoy Panther Athletics and anything his grandsons did. His little red truck with his widely recognized 3Deano license plate will be missed cruising town!
