John R. Allison, 88, of Pontiac, IL passed away at 8:30 am on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at his home in rural Pontiac, IL.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Pontiac with Pastor Tom Goodell officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, March 10, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Pontiac. Burial will follow services at South Side Cemetery in Pontiac, IL. Memorial contributions may be made to Livingston County Relay for Life or First United Methodist Church in Pontiac. Calvert & Martin Funeral Home in Pontiac, is handling arrangements for the family.
John was born May 17, 1928 in Pontiac, Illinois the son of John H. and Louise E. (Scott) Allison. He attended Taylor School in rural Pontiac and graduated from Pontiac Township High School.
He married his high school sweetheart, Joy K. Asper on September 11, 1946. They spent many wonderful years together until cancer took her away. He later married Anna Leona Allen on December 8, 2001 in Hodgenville, Kentucky.
John was a lifetime farmer. He also worked part-time at Wright’s Furniture for many years.
He was one of the founders of the Thresherman’s Blue Grass Festival. John was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Pontiac, serving on a multitude of committees. John and Joy ran the Saturday Night Roller Skate at the Methodist Church for many years. Playing the harmonica brought him great joy, as he played on stage at various venues and nursing homes. Most of all, he enjoyed playing his harmonica for his grandchildren and great grandchildren and they loved to hear and watch him play.
John is survived by his wife: Leona Allison of Pontiac, IL; his daughters: Margaret (Bob) Janssen of Pontiac, IL, Barbara (Thomas) Dixon of Barnett, MO, and Janet (Steve) Tronc of Berea, KY; one son: James (Julie) Allison of Cerro Gordo, IL; his stepsons: Eddie (Mitzi) Allen of Hodgenville, KY and Randy Allen of East View, KY; one granddaughter: Theresa Lopeman (Louis) Cortese of Las Vegas, NV; his grandsons: Robert (Jenn) Dixon of Decatur, IL, Richard Todd (Amanda Sabin) Lopeman of Berkeley, CA, Jonathan (Kristi) Tronc of Plainfield, IN, and Joshua (Lillie) Tronc of Richmond, KY; his step granddaughters: Jennifer (Jason) Waldschmidt, and Melissa (Joe) Pina both of Pontiac, IL, Jodi (Eric) Gardner of Midland, MI, Jacki (Travis) Brangers and Tiffany (Patrick) Arnold of Rineville, KY; his step-grandsons: John (Christine) Betts of Milan, OH, Eric (Jenny) Allen of Hodgenville, KY, and Bryan (Emilie Bell) Allen of Buffalo, KY; his great grandkids: Jakob, Justin, Sam, and Emma Grieff, Megan (JJ) Kessberger, Elena, Carmen, Nora, Santi Pina, Ryder and Fiona Lopeman, Chelsea (Shaun) Holt, Carson Cortese, Delaney and Dresden Dixon, Allison and Madeline Tronc, Wesley Wattenberger, Libby and Abby Gardner, Clayton and Connor Betts, Henry and Annie Allen, Cash and Paxton Brangers; one great grandson: Hendrix Holt. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Joy; and one step daughter-in-law: Teresa “Charlie” Allen.
