James A. Nelson, 83 of Normal, IL., formerly of Pontiac, IL. and Stuart, FL. died Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 1:20AM at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington, IL.
Cremation rites will be accorded and a celebration of Life will be held on Sunday March 19, 2017 at 2:00PM at the Pontiac Elks Lodge, Pontiac, IL. Memorials in Jim’s name may be made to Drake University Bulldog Club, % Drake University Athletics 2507 University Ave. Des Moines, IA. 50311, Boys and Girls Club of Pontiac or a charity of the donor’s choice. Calvert & Martin Funeral Home Pontiac, IL. is handling the arrangements.
Jim was born on March 28, 1933 in Galesburg, IL., a son of Arthur and Gladys (Corbin) Nelson. He married Gail Anderson on October 20, 1973 in Galesburg, IL. She survives in Normal, IL. Also surviving is one son: David (Juliana Duncan) Nelson of Bloomington, IL.; step-children: Lisa (Ed) Schaibley of Bloomington, IL., Laura (Robert) Reardon of Bloomington, IL. and Paul (Nenna) Bailey of Issaquah, WA.; grandchildren: Courtney Nelson, Kendall Kobler, Kyle Schaibley, Connor Schaibley, Lee Reardon, West Reardon, Samuel Bailey and Cecilia Bailey; great grandchildren: Ellyington and Everett Kobler, Dillon and Abby Schaibley; two sisters: Ethel Hendricks and Carol Jean Oakes both of Independence, MO. Jim was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters.
Jim was educated at Graceland College, Drake University and received his dental degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Jim opened his private dental practice in 1960 in Pontiac, IL. and later founded Associated Dentists in Pontiac, IL. in 1973. He was a pioneer clinician in the field of dental implants. Jim was past president of Local Dental Society, past delegate to the American Dental Association, executive councilman in the Illinois Dental Society and past president and board member of Delta Dental. He was a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the International College of Dentists, and Academy of Implants and Transplants. He was named to the Wall of Fame at Graceland University for basketball and was the DD award winner at Drake University. Jim was a member of the Pontiac Elks Club and a life sponsor of Ducks Unlimited. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and golfer. Jim could hit every note of the song Danny Boy.
