Herbert L. "Herb" Zehr Obituary (1925 - 2018)

Herbert L. Zehr age 93 of Normal IL was welcomed at the gates of heaven by his life-long love, Eleanor. Herb passed away at 11:45 AM on Friday, December 7, 2018 at the McLean County Nursing Home, Normal, IL. His funeral service will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at Park United Methodist Church, Bloomington, IL. Rev. Keith Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be Park Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, IL. Visitation will be 10:00 AM-11:00 AM Wednesday at Park United Methodist Church, Bloomington, IL.The family suggests memorials be made to Park United Methodist Church, Bloomington, IL. Arrangements are being handled by Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, IL. Herb was born July 4, 1925 in Gridley, IL the son of Valentine and Wilda Ulrich Zehr. He married Eleanor Bomgarden, his high school sweetheart, after his return from serving in the Army during WW II on January 26, 1946 in Chenoa, IL. They spent 60 years loving each other and are now reunited in perfect peace. She passed away June 4, 2013. Surviving is his son, Phillip D. (Gloria) Zehr, Bloomington, IL, 2 grandchildren, Jessica (Chris) Soucek, Normal, IL, Melissa Zehr, Tampa, FL, 4 great-grandchildren, Jalynne Zehr, Tampa, FL, Peyton Zehr, Bloomington, IL, Connor Soucek, Normal, IL, Caden Soucek, Normal, IL, 1 sister, Ellen Streid, Gridley, IL, 1 brother, David (Jackie) Zehr, Sugar Grove, IL,1 sister in-law, Ruby Vaughn, Mansfield, IL. Herb is preceded in death by his parents. Herb worked for Shield's Jewelry, Bloomington, IL for 42 years and retired as manager. He enjoyed camping and had done volunteer work for the Humane Society of Central Illinois. Herbert served in the US Army during WW II. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather and is half of the sweetest love story ever told.
