John P. "Jack" King Obituary (1922

John P. "Jack" King, 95, passed away May 20, 2018 at the Martin Health Center in Bloomington, where he had resided since 2012. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, May 28, at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home in Bloomington and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. His memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Bloomington. Rev. Vaughn Hoffman will officiate. Jack was born December 30, 1922 in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of Ralph S. King and Florence Gilmore King. After finishing high school in 1940 he worked, attended the University of Wisconsin, enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp, and--important to this story--met Mary Lenore "Danny" Danforth of Bloomington. They were married November 18, 1943 in the old First Methodist Church in Bloomington. Danny died July 11, 2012. After military service in the Pacific, Jack and Danny returned to Madison where Jack began a 43-year career in life insurance. Soon after they moved to Bloomington in 1959, Jack joined the Training Department of State Farm Insurance. Prior to his retirement in 1983, he specialized in Estate Planning applications and served in the Advanced Life Underwriting unit. He is survived by two children, Scott (Jennie) King, and Karen (William) McConnell, both of Bloomington, and one grandson, Geoffrey R. (Ben LeClaire) King in Bloomingdale. He is also survived by his sister, Marian Herreid, Half Moon Bay, CA, three nieces and a nephew, and their families. Jack was a lifelong, dedicated member of the Exchange Club, and also served on the Bloomington Sister Cities (Asahikawa, Japan) committee for many years. He and Danny enjoyed travels to five continents and, especially, their winters in Naples, FL with their many State Farm friends. Jack was an outgoing gentleman who enjoyed playing bridge, tending his roses, and--after retirement--selling life insurance with his friend Joe Jackson. He shared his love of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Dixieland, and classical music with his family, his friends, and anyone who walked down his hallway in Martin Health Center.
